Marine Engineering

The Department of Marine Engineering was established in the defunct College of Science and Technology (CST) in 1974 as the pioneer Department of Marine Engineering in Nigeria.

With the transition of CST to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) in 1980, it adopted the then Senate approved academic curriculum, leading to the award of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in Marine Engineering within a period of five (5) academic sessions. Since then, the programme has been consistently receiving full accreditation from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

However, in 2022, NUC introduced the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) to replace the BMAS in all Nigerian Universities with effect from 2023/2024 academic session and renamed the programme as Marine and Offshore Engineering. In the CCMAS, the B.Eng. in Marine and Offshore Engineering has four options from Year IV such as Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding, Offshore Engineering, and Subsea Engineering. Consequently, the Marine Engineering Department was renamed in 2024 by Senate as “The Department of Marine and Offshore Engineering.” The programme incorporates sea-training and mandatory industrial internship to develop professional skills and adaptability to sea life and substantial capacity to solve problems in the field of Marine and Offshore Engineering and related disciplines.

Vision and Mission of the Department Programme:

Vision

To become an exceptionally advanced technological and leading research department that will be structurally and philosophically oriented to solve practical and challenging maritime engineering problems.

Mission

To produce high quality maritime engineers equipped with sound research and practical ability in analysis, design, construction and maintenance of engineering systems and environment that support human civilization.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

In 3 – 5 years after graduation, the graduates of Marine and Offshore Engineering should have consistently:

  1. Demonstrated the capacity to develop innovative, economic and eco-friendly marine engineering solutions to complex maritime engineering problems;
  2. Shown competence to design, interpret, supervise, and collaborate with others to execute maritime engineering projects in compliance with professional standards based on international best practices;
  3. Exhibited capacity for critical thinking and creative ingenuity that would evolve novel technologies and techniques for solving complex Maritime Engineering problems;
  4. Functioned effectively in interdisciplinary Maritime activities as a team member with the engineering community to achieve corporate goals;
  5. Developed entrepreneurial skills and capacity for lifelong learning with a spirit of self-reliance so as to set up and operate small scale units for self-employment.
