Surveying and Geomatics

Dr. Lawrence Hart
The Current Head of Department
Surveying and Geomatics
Forty-two years ago, the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (now known as Rivers State University) was established by law on the 6th of August 1980 as amended in 2017.
The University, which inherited the assets and liabilities of the then College of Science and Technology, was formally opened on 31st October 1980. The Department of Land Surveying, now Department of Surveying and Geomatics was established in May 1990 as one of the five member-Department of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Nonetheless, Land Surveying was one of the disciplines within the Department of Environmental Sciences in the School of Engineering in 1977 and became a division of the Department of Land Surveying and Estate Management, created in 1982 in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The University Senate in 2013 approved the change of name for the Department from Land Surveying to the Department of Surveying and Geomatics. In line with the change of name, Senate also approved the revised programme of the new Department. The Department has produced graduates from the new programme since 2016/2017 academic session. The Senate of the University approved the commencement of Post Graduate Programme viz Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Surveying and Geomatics from 2016/2017 academic session. Our specialization for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. is in the areas of Geodesy and Geodynamics; Hydrographic Surveying; Surveying and Land Administration and Remote Sensing and Geospatial Information System (GIS). The PGD Surveying & Geomatics programme is only for candidates that have training in Surveying and Geomatics (i.e., B.Sc./B.Tech. 3rd Class/Pass Degree or HND).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Department runs Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programme in Surveying and Geomatics. We also run Post Graduate Degrees Viz: Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) specialized areas of Surveying and Geomatics such as Geodesy and Geodynamics, Hydrographic Surveying, Surveying and Land Administration, Remote Sensing and Geospatial Information System (GIS), etc. The Department runs a Post Graduate Diploma in Surveying and Geomatics.
STRUCTURE OF THE UNIT
The Head of the Department is the administrative and Academic leader of the programme.
There are four categories of staff under him, viz:
i. Lecturers
ii. Technical Instructors
iii. Administrative Staff (Secretary, Typist, Clerk)
iv. The Junior Technical staff (Field overseers and Storekeeper).
The following chart shows the organogram for the administration of the Department. From among the staff particularly the Lecturers, Committees are created to handle academic matters, with the Head of the Department as the Chairman.
PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES
The philosophy of the Surveying and Geomatics programme, seeks to provide education and training for practice in dealing with earth-based or geo-spatial data which may be obtained from different sources including earth-orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors, and ground-based instruments. Such data are processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information technology, computer hardware and software. Relevant courses in basic engineering and sciences have been included in the programme. In addition, courses in computer science, oceanography, environmental studies, and environmental management have also been added to this foundation. This is intended to add a new body of knowledge to the traditional training for Surveyors. The practitioner that this programme will produce would be a more broadly educated Surveyor, who is qualified to engage in the broad and interdisciplinary fields of Engineering, Earth Sciences, Oil and Gas exploration, Oceanography, Hydrography, and Environmental Management. The total duration of the programme is ten semesters (five academic years). Students will be exposed to Supervised Industrial Work Experience (SIWES) during the second semester of the fourth year and Geomatics Camp practical for the long vacations of the second and third years.
OBJECTIVE
The aim is to provide a broadly based education in Surveying and Geomatics and to satisfy the needs for the general and applied fields of environmental and civil engineering, coastal engineering, hydrography, geodesy and geodynamics, earth mineral resources exploration, mapping and positioning, mathematics, etc. The specific objectives are:
- To foster deeper understanding of the basic concepts and principles of surveying and geomatics.
- To promote increasing ability of the students to apply the basic principles to the solutions of new problem in the discipline.
- To make the students realize quite early that intellectual growth and subsequent success are directly related to the strength of command of the fundamental principles and on the ability to apply them successfully.
- To provide training for undergraduates and graduate students in research for future academic staff of Surveying and Geomatics Programme.
- To provide manpower for future Surveying and Geomatics supervisory and management staff to be involved in mapping, geomodelling and environmental activities in commercial and industrial ventures of National Economy either in public or the private sector.
