Department of Office And Information Management

The Department of Office and Information Management, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt was established as a full-fledged Department in the Faculty of Management Sciences in the year 1980. On inception, the department was known as The Department of Secretarial Administration. The Department turned out its first batch of graduates in 1984 (i.e. in the 1983/84 academic session).

By 2009, the rapid advancement in Information Communication Technology (ICT) had compelled a need to expand the curriculum of the department. The expansion warranted a change in the name of the department to reflect innovations in the curriculum. The new name necessitated by the innovations is Office and Information Management.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The philosophy of the programme is to develop the mind, impact both theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and competences in students, providing a thorough grounding in modern trends and practices in Computers, Telecommunications Technologies and Office skills.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the programme are to:

• Develop innovative abilities in students with respect to the field of Office and Information Management.
• Produce graduates who will partner with and effectively run enterprises with Chief Executives/Organisational Stakeholders in both public and private sector institutions/organisations.
• To train students that will secure their livelihood outside paid employment.
• Arm students with the right skill set needed to identify the information needs of an organisation and leveraging on technology to address same.
