The pivotal role of the Department of Chemistry in natural science made Rivers State University to capture it in the University logo as the atomic nucleus with orbital electrons symbolizing science. The Department of Chemistry was established at the inception of the University in 1980 with Dr. M.D. Selema as the pioneer head of Department.

Profile of the HOD

Dr O. S. Bull studied at the famous Imperial College London, United Kingdom in 2018 for PhD – Silicon Containing Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Carbon Capture, Master by Research (Mres) Degree in Green Chemistry, Energy and the Environment (2012) as well as a Deploma of Imperial College (DIC), 2012. In addition, Dr Bull has a Master Degree in Analyical Chemistry (2011) from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (now Rivers State University), Port Harcourt Nigeria.

Dr Bull’s research group is interested in Green, and Sustainable Inorganic Chemistry of the Main Group elements, particularly organosilicon and organoboron compounds as well as those of the transition metals including lanthanoids and actionoids. The group’s research covers several areas of applied cyclodiboradisiloxanes, their derivatives, coodination complexes, and polymers.

In addition, the research group is also interested in the synthesis of COFs and MOFs, particularly containing main group elements as the metal node, and organosilicon and organoboron compounds as the linkers between the nodes is being explored. A number of novel materials have been synthesised and these materials being explored for applications in Carbon Capture, Catalysts for conversion of waste cooking oils or non-edible oils to biodiesel, adsorption of heavy metals and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution, drug delivery, gas separation and purification, optical and magnetic property, and electrical conductivity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department runs a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) at the undergraduate level. The Postgraduate programmes include Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in different fields of specialization.

76th Inaugural Lecture by Professor Tubonimi Joseph Kio Ideriah on the 27th of April,

2022 by 3.00 p.m at New Senate Building, Rivers State University.

PROSPECT

Diversification of fields of specialization e.g. Forensic Chemistry, Chemical Security, Energy Materials, etc.
New classrooms and laboratory buildings
Improve staffing
Center of Excellence for Water, Soil, Oil and Gas analyses.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

As a multi-faceted discipline which deals with the nature and characteristics of matter, Chemistry affords a trainee to acquire knowledge and expertise in the application of scientific principles, entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

ACHIEVEMENTS

FMWR/UNICEF approved laboratory for water analysis
Establishment of Small Scale Enterprises for the production of hand sanitizer, soaps, degreasers and paint.
