The Department of Economics offers a rigorous and demanding but worthwhile and rewarding four-year degree programme leading to the award of B.Sc. degree in Economics.

The programme is designed to provide both academic and professional base from which graduates may continue their personal academic and professional development as they assume managerial responsibilities in either public or private sector of the society. The Department seeks to develop deeper knowledge of Economics (where the discipline is pursued) with effective articulation of ideas aimed at impacting on the society.

Vision

The vision of the Department is to excel in the study of Economics through teaching and research undertaken in search for the truth.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to structure courses and programmes tailored towards meeting the scholarly demands of public and private institutions, international institutions and society at large thereby enhancing the growth and development of world Economics.

PROFILE OF THE HOD

Dennis Brown EWUBARE is a Professor of Economics, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt. He is known for innovative teaching, committed to mentorship, a researcher with visibility in reputable journals and actively involved in university administration. He holds a Bachelors of Science (BSc) degree and Master of Science (MSc) degree in Economics from University of Port Harcourt. He obtained his Doctoral degree (PhD) in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Finance and Banking and Master of Science (MSc) degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the University of Port Harcourt. He obtained his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Accountancy from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. He has authored and co-authored Nine textbooks to his credit in the area of Economics and related disciplines. He has also authored, co-authored and published over one hundred and twenty articles in learned journals and presented papers in local and international conferences and workshops. He was the former Head of Department of Economics VERITAS University Abuja. Former Chairman of University Board of Survey and Member of Several Committees in the same University. He was also the former Head of Department Agric. and Applied Economics, former departmental and Faculty postgraduate coordinator, former member of Postgraduate School Board and member of Postgraduate School Board Committees on – Results Verification, Students Complaints, Compilation & Correction of Abstract for Convocation Ceremony, synopses consideration, Post Postgraduate School Examination Monitoring and Postgraduate School Committee on Admission Racketeering, Rivers State University. He was the former faculty of Social Science representative in the University Senate, Editor-in-chief of Faculty of Social Science journal – Social Science Review and Editor- in- Chief of department of Economics journal – Economic Desk Journals. He is equally a board member and former secretary to Rivers State University Journal- Journal of Oil and Gas technology. He is a member and state secretary of Nigeria Economic society (NES) Rivers State Chapter, member of World Economic Association, American Economic Association and European Economic Association. A former member of NDDC foreign scholarship programme committee, former Vice Chairman, Governing council of FAGC- living Faith Church Educational Centre. He was the Rivers State University representative and Member to Federal Government-World Bank Country Partnership Framework (CPF) Forum on lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by the year 2030. Representative of the Vice Chancellor to Central Bank of Nigeria on Anchor Borrower Programme, Representative of the Vice Chancellor to National University Commission on SASSAKAWWA Programme. He is a committee member of Rivers State University Investment Resource, Member Rivers State University Senate Committee on Power and Electricity consumption, Member Rivers State University Senate Committee on school fees enforcement. He has supervised and co supervised over eighty- five doctoral degree students. He was a former external examiner, Department of Economics, Niger Delta University. Presently, an external examiner both at the undergraduate and postgraduate programme, Department of Economics, University of Port Harcourt. He has successfully engaged in professorial assessment in his area of study and has assessed over thirty professors. He is a member of National University Commission (NUC) accreditation team to Nigerian Universities and currently the substantive Head of Department, Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing and implementing immediate and long term Departmental goals and objectives in accordance with University goals and Objectives.

  • Developing of annual plan of course offering in line with academic needs of the students and in consultation with National university commission (NUC) benchmark.

  • Promoting innovation in the Departmental curriculum and initiatives for the improving visibility and rating.

  • Promoting inter-developmental cooperation and interdisciplinary initiatives.

  • Maintaining active communication with the University administration and related external bodies.

  • Providing recommendation to the University for employment of staff with requisite skills

  • Developing and implementing polices that guide post graduate programmes

  • Promoting research in various aspects of economics for knowledge sharing and policy formulation.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES

The philosophy of the Economics programme in Rivers State University, Port Harcourt is to produce graduates equipped with critical skills and abilities to abstract, using simplified models that identify the essence of a problem, reason deductively, marshal evidence, assimilate structures, analyse qualitative and quantitative data , synthesize information on socio-economic problems, adopt social science concepts and techniques and communicate concisely the findings to the relevant Authorities and a wider public for better policy making and implementation.

OBJECTIVE

  • To provide the students with requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enhance their capacity thereby enabling them to apply relevant economic principles to real life situations.
  • Inculcate in the students a deep understanding and deep appreciation of the fundamentals and theories in Economic discipline.
  • Provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of an economy and develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in array of settings.
  • Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to the solution of societies’ economic problems.
  • Equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems of economic policy.
  • Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and its relevance in a variety of contexts.
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skill base with which they can proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas or in interdisciplinary areas that involve Economics.
  • Develop in students a range of transferable skills that would be of value in employment.
