ABOUT THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences (FBCS) commenced in 2018 as a pre-requisite for accreditation by the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria. It is currently located on the clinical campus of the Rivers State University at Hospital Road, Port Harcourt Township and in the Pathology block at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for clinical laboratory exposures.
The FBCS delivers the first-year clinical training of medical students undertaken in the fourth year of the Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) program. It is an intermediary faculty between the Basic Medical and Clinical faculties, that deals with the basics (pathological and pharmacological) of disease processes and its applicability in clinical practice and research. It is also services other medical and allied health professional programs. The Part II MBBS programme is the major academic program of the FBCS for undergraduate medical students**.** It runs for a period of twelve (12) months, during which training will be carried out and culminate in the Part II MBBS professional examination. The faculty also hosts postgraduate programs including master’s and Ph.D courses offered by the departments.
Prof. Ibinabo Laura Oboro, the current Dean took over leadership of the faculty on the 14th day of February 2025. Former Deans include Prof. Orikomaba K. Obunge (2015-2018), Prof. Chituru G. Orluwene (2019-2020) and Prof. Kaladada I. Korubo (2020- 2025).

To produce medical and health professionals who are capable of critical thinking and deductive reasoning in the pathological basis of diseases and the pharmacologic approach to disease prevention and management via continuous improvement in training methodology in tandem with global standards and quality management.

The College of Medical Sciences of the Rivers State University has three faculties which are the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences.
Our Faculty is an intermediary faculty that deals with the science of the cause and effect of diseases (pathology) and the science of drugs and their effects on the body (pharmacology).
The FBCS commenced in 2018 as a pre-requisite for accreditation by the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria, with the appointment of Prof. Orikomba K. Obunge as the pioneer Dean, who was replaced by Prof. Chituru Godwin Orluwene in 2019 and Prof. Kaladada Korubo in 2020.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The faculty is involved in the training of undergraduate medical students at four hundred level. At this level, students will be taught courses from the four departments of Pathology (Anatomical Pathology; Chemical Pathology; Haematology, Blood Transfusion & Immunology; and Medical Microbiology) and also courses from Pharmacology department. The faculty also offers borrowed courses to other departments outside of the faculty.

Physical structure
The facilities of the FBCS are currently in the college of medical sciences building in the Rivers State University and the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Laboratory block for both practical pathology and clinical exposures.
PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMMES
THE PART II MB, BS PROGRAMME
The Part II MBBS programme is the major academic program of the FBCS for undergraduate medical students**.** It runs for a period of twelve (12) months, during which training will be carried out using formats that include lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory sessions (practicals) and other teaching methods as deemed fit by departments. It is composed of an initial introductory posting, followed by block postings in the 5 departments of the faculty. These will culminate in the Part II MBBS professional examination. All students who do not meet the requirements to be considered successful at the main Part II MBBS professional examination will undergo a re-sit examination, three (3) months after the main examination. Continuous assessment tests constitute 30% of overall scores.
To qualify for the Part II Professional MBBS Examination, a student must make at least 75 % attendance at lectures and other training activities. The Part II MBBS Examination consists of two written papers (Essay and multiple choice), a practical and an oral examination. To be successful at the Part II MBBS professional examination, the student must score at least 50% in all 5 departments of the FBCS. The final examination contributes 70% of the final score. A closed marking system will be employed for marking essay type questions.
